Regarding the ASUS X299 motherboard: when performing a fresh Windows 10 install, you’ll likely hit an error that will loop. The solution I found was to go into the BOIS and disable the wireless and LAN modules. This finally allowed my Windows installation to complete. Then I was able to download firmware updates.
